WIRF Triathlon

SunSmart Women’s Triathlon

On Sunday 15th March, myself, Michelle Coelho, Lauren Parry, and Kristy Bailey competed in the SunSmart Women’s Triathlon at Whitfords Nodes Beach Park, Hillarys, representing Beyond Bank. The Women’s and Infants Research Foundation  (WIRF) is a beneficiary of this great event run by TriEvents. WIRF’s goal was to enter lots of teams into the triathlon to assist in raising funds for, and awareness of, their vital research into preterm birth.

We had been training for this event since early January, and would meet at the beach regularly for an ocean swim, cycle, and run. My first words to Michelle when we embarked upon this challenge were: “I don’t do early mornings”. Well, I have never had so many early mornings! I also joined a triathlon training group as being a little older than the others, I thought it would give me the edge I needed. This meant that some Saturday’s I was up at 4.30am. During that training I felt like I had done a Tour De France, Ocean Swim to Rottnest and run several marathons!

Last Sunday our efforts all came together and we all completed the SunSmart Women’s Triathlon. Myself in under 55mins, Kristy and Michelle in 49 mins and Lauren in 52mins, which was a great effort.

This was such a bonding experience for the four of us. Training together and supporting each other, through the highs and lows of training (and there were some trying incidents!) made our bond stronger and made us more determined.

It was so much fun and such a great atmosphere with over 1,500 women competing on the day, no one was your competitor, we were all just in it together –  especially during the ocean swim! It was the roughest we had seen all year, with the cyclone coming down the coast.

We are already considering what our next challenge will be!
