Shacky – a ‘tiny’ idea with big potential

In our busy world it can sometimes seem difficult to find peace and quiet – to really get away from it all.

It was a search for exactly this that led Joep Pennartz to an innovative business idea which has secured him a 2016 Beyond Bank Australia Community Entrepreneur Program grant.

A personal yearning for a private, restful and affordable holiday option inspired Joep to develop a new accommodation online platform that offers people a peaceful, rural break while helping farmers increase their income.

Through the Shacky business model, rural landowners can rent out tiny houses located on their land to holidaymakers. The first Shacky holiday home has been established in Victoria and more are currently being planned.

The goal of Beyond Bank’s Community Entrepreneur Program is to help entrepreneurs like Joep turn great ideas into reality.

We were particularly impressed by the Shacky concept because of its potential to contribute to regional communities.

Farmers work tirelessly, but their income is not always predictable as it can be impacted by seasonal conditions. Shacky can help support our farmers by giving them a potential new source of income and this was very attractive to Beyond Bank Australia.

Applications for the next round of Entrepreneur Program grants will open soon and more information can be found at
