A constant balancing act – Type 1 Diabetes

At least four times a day, every day of the year, many young Australians need to monitor their blood sugar levels very closely, usually by pricking their fingers.

You see, this is the only way they can tell just how much insulin they need to either inject or receive via an insulin pump, to keep their blood sugar levels as close to ‘normal range’ as possible.

And, they must do this in order to stay alive. Too much sugar or too little sugar can bring on a life threatening reaction.

These people have Type 1 Diabetes, a lifelong autoimmune disease that usually occurs in children and has nothing to do with diet or actual sugar intake.

Researchers are working hard to understand the complex mix of genetic and environmental factors that may cause or trigger this disease and this is where JDRF [1] plays its part.

JDRF – formerly Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation [1] – is the world’s leading not-for-profit supporter of Type 1 Diabetes research globally. The funds raised by supporters for JDRF in Australia are devoted to research projects across Australia, including a number of studies in South Australia and Western Australia.

Recently, Beyond Bank [2] was happy to present a cheque for $3,324.09 to JDRF on behalf of our customers in these States.

This funding will go towards research projects in Australia, including two specific projects in SA and WA: the ENDIA (Early Environmental Determinants of Pancreatic Islet Autoimmunity) study at the University of Adelaide and the Adolescent Diabetes Intervention Trial in WA.

It’s another example of how Beyond Bank’s Community Reward Account [3] Program is making a real difference to people’s lives, and it’s all because of YOU – our wonderful customers.

If you would like to see more of this kind of grassroots assistance to an organisation that’s dear to your heart, all you need do is:

Step 1: Open a Beyond Bank Community Reward Account [3]
Step 2: Nominate a group that you would like to support
Step 3: There is no step 3, you simply use the account as you normally would, but the more you deposit into it the bigger the reward for your nominated group.

At the end of the financial year, Beyond Bank [2] calculates 1.25 percent of the average balance held in all Community Reward Accounts [3] assigned to each organisation and donates that amount from Beyond Bank [2] revenues (not from your account).

Well done JDRF on the terrific work you are doing to find a cure and improve the lives of the many people suffering from this disease.
