Enterprising Women – Whyalla

Georgina McGuinness was the perfect guest speaker at an evening event hosted by Enterprising Women Whyalla and Beyond Bank held at the Waters Edge Restaurant in Whyalla on Wednesday 22 July.

The event was well attended by ladies and a few brave men, primarily representing volunteer groups, private enterprise, tertiary bodies and not-for-profit organisations.

Starting as a cadet journalist at Channel 9 Adelaide in 1987, Georgina reflected upon the many changes she witnessed in the media over a 25 year career as a reporter, producer, sub-editor and presenter of the weekend bulletin.

Georgina’s speech to the group was not only engaging, inspirational but also entertaining with a mix of humour throughout.

We now know newsreaders wear shorts under the desk, stage practical jokes on colleagues and make mistakes and slip-ups just like the rest of us! Georgina also discussed the pressure on high profile women to maintain their appearance and noted the inequality of getting old on TV.

There was also another message and that was to look for opportunities and embrace change particularly in this challenging employment climate.

Georgina spoke about her life experiences not only in front of the camera, but how she had to reinvent herself in a new career as a senior communications advisor in State politics during a tumultuous election campaign.

After a two year engagement in the political arena, Georgina made another change in career starting her own media and communication consultancy with Beyond Bank one of her key clients.

We certainly applaud her for all her amazing achievements and know there will be many more to come!
