After months and months of tireless work and perseverance, a small and dedicated group saw their vision become a reality.
On Tuesday 24th November, Port Lincoln Mayor Mr Bruce Green officially announced the opening of the Port Lincoln Wig Library Inc.
In front of a large audience gathered at their new home within the Leukaemia Foundation office, group President Mrs Christine Jettner began proceedings with a brief overview of their journey thus far.
Created around an alliance between key individuals representing the Australian Red Cross Lower Eyre Peninsula, the Port Lincoln Health Advisory Council and the local Leukaemia Foundation, the passion and drive was fueled by a community need and the success of similar services in Whyalla and the Riverland.
Rather than re-invent the wheel they sought help and assistance from these organisations and, as with so many like-minded community organisations, the support and direction was overwhelming.
To further support and reinforce Christine’s story of the journey, Mrs Ellen Traeger, representing the Caroline Bristow Wig Library (Riverland), spoke of the local community need for the Wig Library service and the pride and joy that is associated when successfully reuniting a sufferer back into mainstream by building their confidence and sense of well being.
As a further highlight, Ellen presented a $2,000 cheque on behalf of their organisation to further assist the Port Lincoln Wig Library.
Mr John Hunt, Community Development Manager, then spoke on behalf of Beyond Bank Australia. Due to our commitment and presence within the local Port Lincoln community, John had soon become aware of the group’s intention and couldn’t wait to become involved.
With great encouragement and support from local Beyond Bank branch staff, the group soon had a meeting place, a new committee member (staff member Deb Thomas), banking advice galore, fundraising initiatives and introductions to like-minded groups creating ongoing partnerships.
So it was with great affection and emotional attachment when John Hunt was able to announce a $5,000 grant from Beyond Bank to further kick start and support the outstanding work of the Wig Library.
Mayor Bruce Green then took centre stage and spoke of the resilience and strength of his local community, and the continual positivity being generated by concepts such as this.
From there, the official opening conducted by Mayor Bruce Green was a mere formality, albeit to the rousing cheers of a captive audience.
To show your support open a Community Reward Account with Beyond Bank and nominate the Port Lincoln Wig Library as your CRA recipient, the more supporters the more reward they will receive.
