On 20th May the Port Augusta Community came together for National Families Week celebrations at Gladstone Square.
With the motto of “Stronger Families, Stronger Communities” the event organised by Centacare Catholic Family Services Country SA focused on activities aimed at bringing families together, plus providing information such as health and legal information for families.
The event, now in its 13th year as part of National Families Week, showcased 14 local Port Augusta community organisations coming together to show their solidarity.
Families are the strongest link in a person’s life and it was fantastic to see the families of Port Augusta came together at one fun day at Gladstone Square.
Activities included live entertainment, a free sausage sizzle, arts, crafts, interactive displays, a bouncy castle, face painting and even a visit from Spongebob Squarepants much to the delight of Local Community Development Manager John Hunt and local Relationship Consultant Kimberly Hamilton.
The Beyond Bank handball competition and mini golf challenge were a massive hit with the children and the children at heart.
The day culminated with an outdoor cinema experience in the park where free popcorn, coffee, tea, hot chocolate were devoured by the locals.
With many towns in Regional South Australia facing tough times ahead, it is days like these that build stronger communities. Being part of something so meaningful makes you realise how important families are in difficult times.
