Orange Sky visits Woden

When you get a big orange van that blows bubbles, that holds two washers and dryers; carries with it is the most important equipment – six orange chairs and rocks up to Westfield Woden to attend the Beyond Bank Branch official opening. You know it’s going to be a great day!

“Bring along the radio, Mix 106.3FM” they said. And to add to the fun our friends San Churros brought along the free coffees and churros for people making donations. They also kept us volunteers and the staff from Beyond Bank watered and fed with lots of free caffeine and churros too.

And so on Friday 21st October 2016 we had a party at Woden, and it’s safe to say, we had an absolutely epic day.

But what were shoppers making donations towards, I hear you ask?

Well it was for a big orange van named Dasher that travels around Canberra and Queanbeyan, washing clothes for our friends on the street who happen to be homeless or in a situation that they cannot wash and dry their clothes.

Our buddies at Beyond Bank partner with Orange Sky Laundry and provide funding so we could introduce Dasher to our Canberra and Queanbeyan community. Beyond Bank are just one of our partners in the ACT.

To date we have been operating here for six months completing more than 533 washes! And because washing and drying clothes takes time, we have spent more than 2000 hours having positive and genuine conversations with our friends.

Now at the beginning I said that the most important equipment was not the washers, and it wasn’t the dryers, that it was in fact our six orange chairs! That is because with these chairs, we stand or we sit and have chats with our friends. Our conversations are positive and genuine, and I can tell you now that every one of our 40+ volunteers enjoy our chats and the experiences have changed every… one… of us.

So from us all at Orange Sky Laundry, it’s a big THANK YOU to Beyond Bank for partnering with us, providing funding from their Community Foundation and fundraising via their branches, to help us help our buddies in the Canberra region.
