Volunteering with Edmund Rice Camps has given us a whole new perspective on giving back!

My name is Craig Flynn and I am part of the stellar team who are the “Relationship Support Unit” here in WA.

Along with our manager and three team mates we headed down south to the town of Harvey (140kms south of Perth & major supplier of Perth’s milk supply) to assist Edmund Rice Camps with a Funfest Day with the Harvey Primary school students.

Edmund Rice Camps offers camps and other recreational and development activities to local disadvantaged kids aged between 7-16 years who would not otherwise have such opportunities. They have a strong positive focus on supporting children at risk or who are experiencing some form of disadvantage.

Harvey and the surrounding district suffered greatly in January 2016 with a devastating bushfire that ripped through the surrounding region levelling over 180 buildings (162 homes razed to the ground) and the tragic loss of 2 lives. This dark time left many of the local families without homes and possessions.

Edmund Rice Camps arranged with the local Principal to come down and have a fun filled day of ripping activities out on the main school oval.

Our team of volunteers were allocated a group each of super charged students which we supervised and also joined in as they went around the 4 different fun stations on the oval. The only way to describe the scene was like a Hi-5 concert on steroids at 110 decibels for 7 nonstop hours!

The screams and laughter of kids, splattering the camp leaders (who absolutely loved the experience) in jelly and glitter gave me a feeling of absolute pleasure. In addition, being part of a team of like minded people giving back to a bunch a kids who really have had a truly tough year was rewarding to me on all levels. I’m a fairly tough nut but hearing the stories about what those young students had been through and being part of a positive uplifting experience delivered by Edmund Rice Camps made my year.

I recommend if you have 8-10 hours to spare and want to make a real difference then talk to the community team on how you can help Edmund Rice Camps.
