The Great South Australian Duck Race – Strathalbyn

Each year the Rotary Club hosts the ‘Great South Australian Duck Race’ in the beautiful town of Strathalbyn.

Staff members from Beyond Bank Australia’s Mount Barker branch, Wealth Management division, and Community division all took part in supporting the event. The bank had a marquee set up on the day to support the community with their banking needs as well as a handball competition for the kids, which was very popular!

There were 2 main types of duck races on the day:

  • A Corporate Duck Race where 100+ decoy ducks battle it out – decorated in the branding of their respective businesses.
  • The Great Duck Race where 2,500 smaller yellow plastic duckies took to the water to race to the end and the winner received $1,000!

The Mt Barker branch and the Wealth/Community team both entered decorated ducks into the corporate race. As we go above and beyond for our members, both ducks were decorated as ‘hot air balloons’. Fits the bill, right?

As the Corporate Race started, both of our ducks pushed past their competitors and took to the lead very quickly! Unfortunately, a huge gust of wind caused the Wealth/Community duck to capsize halfway through the race. The Mt Barker duck kicked on, but only metres from victory – another gust of wind and the Mt Barker duck capsized too! But like water off a duck’s back, the Mt Barker duckie drifted slowly on its side towards the finish to take out 2nd place! That’s a feather in our duck’s cap, you could say!

It was a fantastic day for everyone who attended. The funds raised on the day go towards the local community and Rotary International projects such as End Polio which are great causes. In addition, the Beyond Bank staff who attended were able to meet some wonderful people and help them out with their banking needs. Winners all round!
