Michelle joins Road Raise
In November last year, I had an opportunity to meet with Jodi Farley, Partnerships Manager from Canteen. I was eager to meet with Jodi after some encouragement from a colleague, Shane Farley who planted the seed for me to give some thought to participating in Canteen’s 2018 Road Raise. Given my love for cycling, a strong commitment to our communities and always looking for an opportunity to embrace new challenges this seemed like a perfect fit.
After meeting with Jodi and listening to her share real life stories, I learnt a lot about the amazing work that Canteen does to support young people who have had their world turned upside down by cancer. We discussed the key fundraising event on the annual calendar – Road Raise, which is a 7 day ride from Adelaide to Melbourne to raise money and awareness for Canteen. The ride is now in its 3rd year and has raised over $300,000 in the past 2 years with a goal to raise over $200,000 this year.
Shortly after our meeting, I emailed Jodi to say “I’m in!”. Now the real work begins- I’ve given some considerable thought about this very big stretch goal, recognising it is approximately 1,100 kms over 7 days (an average of 157 kms a day) with the knowledge the most I have ever ridden on any given day is 110 kms. The thought of 7 consecutive days had me excited and extremely nervous all in one. So I got thinking about the plan I needed to put in place to make this possible, the ride itself and most importantly my fundraising.
Having made an introduction, I would love to take you on my journey with this being the first of many blogs to follow in the lead up to this event. I would be extremely grateful of your support towards my fundraising efforts by clicking on the link below to make a donation – every bit counts and together we can all make a difference to the lives of young people being supported by Canteen through their wide range of services- specialist hospital care, counselling, and peer support programs to help rebuild their foundations and connect with others with similar experiences.
A very big thank you for your support in advance and I look forward to sharing my weekly blogs from here on in.
