Keeping up with modern payment methods
The last 10 years have seen a 90 per cent decline in the use of cheques, as faster and more secure payments methods have taken over.
Less than 0.2 per cent of Australians use cheques to make payments. The Australian Government has set a target to phase out cheques in the market by 2030 and Beyond Bank’s external cheque facilitator will no longer support this service by May 2024. We will stop issuing and accepting Beyond Bank cheques as a payment method by this time.
When will the changes to Beyond Bank cheques happen?
7 January 2024
Customers will not be able to order a new cheque book. If you have an active cheque book, you will not be able to renew that book past this date.
17 May 2024
Beyond Bank cheques will not be accepted as a payment method. Any cheques that have been drawn, including Beyond Bank corporate cheques, must be presented to us or any financial institution for payment by 17 May 2024.
These changes relate only to cheques that are issued by Beyond Bank and will not affect deposits of non-Beyond Bank cheques into Beyond Bank.
What are the alternatives to cheques?
Visa Debit or Visa Credit Card
Suitable for payments requiring a card to make one-off or regular purchases, e.g. subscription services like Netflix, a monthly charity donation or insurance payment.
Scheduled Payment
Suitable for regular payments of the same amount.
A scheduled payment is a good option for paying things like rent or your club’s member fees. Once a scheduled payment is set up, you can make changes or cancel the payment yourself at any time through the Mobile App or Internet Banking.
Direct Debit
Suitable for regular payments where the amount or date might change.
This is a good way to pay merchants such as utility providers. At a set date, the payment will automatically be deducted from your account, as long as you have funds in the account. You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by speaking to us or the merchant.
BPAY®
Suitable for one-off or to schedule a future or regular transfer.
Some organisations have BPAY® as a bill payment option, where they provide you with a Customer Reference Number (CRN) and Biller Code to make payment.
PayID
Suitable for speed and in-person payments.
This is a great way to send or receive payments in-person on the spot through the Mobile App or Internet Banking, e.g. if you’re splitting a restaurant bill with friends.
To set it up, simply link your bank account to your mobile number or email address. When someone needs to pay you, instead of giving them your bank account details, give them your PayID to make a payment through their banking app or internet banking.
