How to save money by streamlining your grocery shopping.

When it comes to saving money, every little bit helps so it’s important to identify any areas where financial gains can be made. A great example of this is when doing your weekly grocery shopping, a time when many of us forget about our savings goals and spend money on unnecessary items that we either don't need or won't use.

Luckily, it's easy to streamline your grocery shopping habits, and in this article, we'll be looking at a few strategies to do so.

Stick to your list.

If you go grocery shopping without a list, it's easy to forget which items you need and which ones have simply tickled your fancy while browsing. This can lead to unnecessary purchases. In some cases, you may find that you don't even have time to cook with all of the produce you've bought before it expires. Not only is this a waste of money, but it also contributes to Australia's growing food waste problem, so make a list, check it twice, and stick to it between the aisles.

Shop smart.

There's no reason you can't shop smart and still look for the best deals. There are a couple of ways that this can be done, with one of the most obvious being to look out for products that are on sale. Regardless of whether it's canned tomatoes or packets of pasta, keeping an eye out for slashed prices on long-lasting products that you use frequently is a great way to reduce the cost of future shops.

Similarly, make sure to check the expiry of any perishable items. The longer they'll survive on your shelf, the more likely it is that you'll get to use them, avoiding financial and food waste.

Check the cupboards.

Another simple, easy way to limit your shopping spend and keep money in your savings account is to have a quick look through your cupboards before you hit the shops. You might be surprised to find certain items on your list tucked away at the back of the shelf, allowing you to organise your shopping list and reduce your overall spend.

This is also a great excuse to reorganise your pantry. Having a less cluttered food storage space will make it far easier to quickly work out what you need from the supermarket and what you already have.

Invest in storage solutions.

Finally, if you want to make your money go further when it comes to food, while also reducing wastage, it's a good idea to invest in some top-notch storage solutions. These include the likes of resealable bags and sealed containers which will keep produce fresher for longer. Similarly, if you're not already using your freezer to its full potential, it may be time to rethink some of your more general storage habits. The life of common products such as bread and meat can be extended through storage in the freezer, so if you're not completely sure you'll get through something before its expiry date, make a space for it among the ice cubes.

By keeping these simple tips in mind when grocery shopping, you'll be able to ensure you're not just saving money, but also preventing food from going to waste. To find out more about how to boost your savings account balance, contact Beyond Bank today.
